July 26, 2022 - Lovelock, James – passed away on his 103rd birthday. I guess that means he won't get the Nobel Prize as they don't give it posthumously. Maybe they will change their minds. Hopefully Science won't be caught in the same trap as the Catholic Church was with respect to Darwin, Galileo, Teilhard, et al. I predict that eventually, Lovelock will be recognized as the Earth shaking giant that he was. Read more about him in the Wild Hunt and in The Guardian.

December 26, 2022 - Woke Capitalism - Today, for the first time I saw the word "woke" applied to capitalism. That adjective says a lot about what capitalism should be, namely, awakened to the adverse effects of focusing only on the bottom line. In my vision of woke capitalism, the bottom line would incorporate all the external costs, including the eco-social costs to nature and society.  This would of course reduce profit, but not necessarily to zero or negative. The challenge, if we are to live with capitalism, is to weed out the corporations for whom the bottom line turns red after incorporating external costs, and evolve new ones that can eke out enough profit to keep investors interested but not so much that anyone becomes insanely rich. It gives me hope to see coverage of this issue. More and more investors are waking up.
